review 1: If I can help it, I try not to read blurbs because I like the element of surprise. So I really did not know what to expect when I read this. I was eventually disappointed because it turns out it's a paranormal novella. I've read a few books by Charlotte Stein before (though none were paranormal) and although I can't say I'm a fan, I've always liked her male characters. I think there is an overload of alpha male protagonists in romance novels - has been for years - and unfortunately very little has changed. This is why I find Stein's male protagonists quite refreshing because they have a sort of quiet confidence that I like in my men who don't have to beat their chests and declare to have "never been in love before until I met you" emo bullshit. No, Stein's males, I believe... more, doesn't make unnecessary declarations of love. Based on the books I've read so far, they far more honest about their feelings and Stein spares us from having to read useless subplots about the couple's journey to find each other and realise, "Yes, I DO love him/her!" It usually takes almost the entire book for the man to realise this, but why it only takes a woman almost an instant, I'll never know. But I digress. Unfortunately this was one of those books. Because it's a novella, it's probably why the story seemed so rushed. So rushed that there was no foreplay whatsoever, which I believe is an important component in erotica. Even the structure was a bit awkward; there is no proper beginning and there is no proper end. Therefore I feel like I've missed a huge chunk of the storyline, at the same time received no real closure either because the ending was a little too abrupt.
review 2: Serena and Connor already know each other and are attracted at the begining of the book. The world is dark, depressing and controlled by werewolves. Connor has been tortured for years and Serena is his nurse. How can this possibly be sexy? Somehow Ms Stein makes it work, because I found it very sexy and sweet. Connor was willing to stay and be tortured daily just to be with Serena. Now that's love! less
