review 1: I did not enjoy Borders of the Heart by Chris Fabry nearly as much as I had the 2 previous books I recently ready by him---Dogwood and June Bug. In this suspense novel, John David ('JD') Jessup, a former musician who turned his back on his career after the death of his wife and moved to New Mexico to learn about organic farming finds a beautiful young Mexican woman, Maria, lying nearly dead in the desert. Instead of turning her over to the border patrol, he makes a decision to help her that leads him into putting his life at stake evading a ruthless killer involved with a drug cartel who wants her dead at any cost. The daughter of a drug lord, Maria has turned from her former life after coming to a Christian faith and wants to try to save the people of her village from... more the drug cartel. As JD helps Maria in her escape from the killer, she helps him face his past and turn from fear of being hurt again to facing life again. Throughout the book, characters share their Christian beliefs in the face of incredible dangers and even imminent death. I had a hard time dealing with the many killings in the novel, especially of certain people and also felt that there was not enough depth to the characters of JD and Maria. There were glimpses but not enough details.
review 2: I really liked June Bug, another of Fabry's books, so when I saw that he was coming out with a book about a guy moving from Nashville to Tucson, finding a beautiful Mexican woman in the desert, I thought this sounds interesting. I'm not a big fan of Christian genre books, though in June Bug, the Christian part was completely in character for the characters in the book. In Borders of the Heart, not so much so, a bit preachy in places - and remarkably violent - a lot of people get murdered in this book, representing evil I guess. Anyway, this author comes up with very tight story lines, and tells a good story well, with interesting twists and turns in the end. However, I was relieved when it was finished as I don't like all the killing and threats. Guess he was trying to be realistic to what can be a pretty grim border existence. It was fun reading about places we know well. less
