review 1: Delightful. One of my FAVORITE activities in grade school was when the teacher would pass around a folder of pictures. We were to pick one and then write a story about the picture. Great fun. Great flights of fantasy. This is that exercise done with some of the best writers of our day. The surprise was that my favorite was the one by Stephen King - does make you wonder about his childhood, though, but then again, what of his books does not make you wonder about his childhood;-). A close second was the one by Lois Lowry, but then again, I have had so many wonderful flying dreams, that was a natural. And close third was Kate DiCamillo's - such a story of loss and pain and family and healing all in such a short space.

... moreeat. My top 4 are Stephen King's, Louis Sacher's, Lois Lowry's, and Chris Van Allsburg's.But let's be honest; the real magic of the Harris Burdick illustrations is the possibility, the potential put in front of young readers, young writers. It is impossible (at least for me) to see these illustrations, these story titles, and not start imagining. And a lot of these stories felt like they cut all that potential short.I think the point of the Mysteries of Harris Burdick is that we make up our own stories. Even with so many great writers put together in the same volume, I was a little disappointed in what they made of these potential stories. less

Another in a long line of books I've read solely because Lemony Snicket has a blurb in it or on it.

Loved the story "The Third-Floor Bedroom" by Kate DiCamillo.
