review 1: The Misadventures of Sweetie Pie by Chris Van Allsburg, The hamster who would soon be known as Sweetie Pie has watched all his friends leave the pet store, but he's resisted. All his owner had forgotten about him and he was passed down to a new family hoping for the best. . A student who's supposed to bring Sweetie Pie home over school break leaves the hamster outside in the snow, and it looks like the end for Sweetie Pie or a new beginning.I love how the author made the book about an animal and how small animals also have necessities. I like how the book teaches about responsibility and children read what happens when they aren’t responsible with their actions and how to be conscientious pet owner. The book is filled with lots of color and new adventures for the hamste... morer along the way. The hamster’s expressions were clear in the story, his frustrations when someone wants to take him home, he’s sad when he is abandon in the park. The illustrator Chris did a wonderful job putting lots of detail in the illustrations. The book is based on a true story. Illustrations such as the hamster being buried in the snow and being terrified by a dog could cause sensitivity to young readers, parents may have to take consideration before reading it to a young reader. I would recommend the book as a read aloud in a classroom, the teacher could ask children who have pets what their responsibilities might be, and also it’s a great book for older readers. Overall, the book is useful for variety of activities, the plot is easy to follow and the illustrations are great.
review 2: I grabbed this because everything by Chris Van Allsburg is great and I had seen it mentioned on potential Caldecott lists. It's a miss on two fronts- the illustrations-- which seem "off"; the hamster looks like a bear, the people have a creepy odd affect; and the storyline which is horrible. A hamster is mistreated by humans, abandoned, forgotten and eventually goes and lives with the squirrels. What kid will enjoy this? They may feel guilty about begging for a small pet and quickly losing interest--but this doesn't seem like a book anyone would reach for twice. I'm sorry it wasn't better. less

A good example about how not to take care of a pet. Not for young or sensitive children.

This is a heart wrenching story. I did not like any of these kids.
