review 1: Milly is a woman too irritating for words (and the type who thinks womankind's ultimate goal is to find a man. Here's an idea: single people can actually be happy and fulfilled, too – yes, even at Christmas!) I found her self-centred, desperate, spoilt, intense, negative, whiny and something of a bunny-boiler and I don't blame men for running for the hills! She started making a wedding gift list on Pinterest when she'd been dating her boyfriend for 3 months for goodness' sake. I'm under the impression the author imagines all women will instantly, secretly identify with her; despite classing myself as a romantic, I just find her scary! I just wanted to shake her and tell her to pull herself together, look around her and see how lucky she was, particularly when a local DJ ... morewas encouraging people to enter his competition where all proceeds go to the homeless. Does being confronted with people with much worse problems than her give Milly some perspective and make her see how much she has and that she should make the most of it? Nope! She has no shame and throws herself another self-pity party. All the way through the book, I was waiting for the moment she'd wake up to herself and have an epiphany, but sadly it didn't happen.Unfortunately, this failed to make me feel very seasonal. I'm pretty sure I didn't see 'wring the neck of the main protagonist in your festive novella' in this year's guide to goodwill. I'm off to try a different one. Also, just a thought, but if you were in Milly's position, wouldn't you wish for some things to make the world a better place aswell, or at least some things for loved ones?
review 2: I loved the sound of 'The Christmas List' and was really interested in reviewing it. Chrissie Manby kindly sent me a copy of her new novella when it was ready. As children, Milly Arnold and her sisters always made a Christmas list on the 1st of December which was then sent off to Santa via the chimney, a family tradition continued by her married sister. Milly who has always loved Christmas is especially looking forward to it this year, but things change within minutes when she unexpectedly gets dumped. The last thing Milly wants to do on the 1st of December is go to her elder sister's house for lunch, but she doesn't really have a choice. When her nephews sit down to write out their Christmas lists they insist that she also does one. Milly doesn't really expect to get any of her requests, but just goes along with it. However, things can work in mysterious ways. Will Milly find the happiness she truly deserves?I really enjoyed 'The Christmas List'. Though predictable in places this was a magical little read. I recommend getting a copy of this novella. It's bound to get you in the mood for Christmas.I hope Chrissie Manby writes more novellas like this. less
