The Three Pigs by David Wiesner

Rating: ★★★★★

Genre: Children’s literature

Medium: Hardcover, retelling

Synopsis: The three little pigs aren’t going to be threatened by the big bad wolf anymore…instead, they’re going outside of their story and creating a new one not only for themselves, but for other animals in distress!

Review: Can someone say metafiction???  I’m a total sucker for all of Wiesner’s books.  They’re intriguing, artistic, and pleasantly weird.  This book takes on a comic-style format which allows the pigs to escape from their panels and into the empty space in the gutters and save other animals.  So, just like I said–intriguing, artistic, and weird.  I absolutely love the use of white space and comic-style word bubbles, as well as the narrative itself.  After all, there’s something empowering in rejecting an imposed narrative and creating your own.  This is definitely a retelling that you all should read if you haven’t already!
