review 1: Can't believe how many people have given this 4 and 5 stars! I can only just about scrape up 1! To me it felt like the author had made a list of every cliché she could think of and then made sure she used each one. Then she got as many stock characters involved as possible - feisty heroine, brave and handsome hero, evil villain, crotchety grandfather with the heart of gold, wicked stepfather. Then for good measure she threw in some highly unlikely dramatic incidents. Stirred it all up and came up with this apology for a novel. Only read it as it was my book group choice, otherwise wouldn't have wasted my time.
review 2: This is a historical romance set in Sweden and China, which makes it unusual. Unfortunately, that is the only thing unusual about it. I enjoye
... mored it partially - the writing is decent and the unusual setting makes it interesting, but the characters are very cliched in their actions and words, and that's what eventually brings the story down. Killian is grandson of Lord Rossyn in Scotland and he is at odds with his grandfather. He is sent to Sweden to stay with distant family and sails on a ship that he won in a game of chance. Once in Sweden he meets Jess who is struggling with her stepfather, who has stolen her inheritance. I don't mind cliched storylines in a historical romance, but the writing must then lift the story up somehow out of the cliche, and unfortunately, this author is never able to do that. less

A good historical fiction-romance novel. Kept my interest. Was a quick and easy read.

I really didn't enjoy the writing, but the story itself was a good thought.
