review 1: Bessie is recently widowed and forced to leave Belfast to escape the people who killed her husband. She and her (poorly behaved) son land in a small village, where she finds a place to live, a job and a collection of people with assorted quirks. Parts of the story are entertaining, however, the dialog is all done in a brogue, which can make the story hard to follow. The author also weaves too many large concepts into the book, making it feel disjointed at times.
review 2: I thought this book was quite entertaining and a fun summer read. Although it had a serious underlying plot (the troubles in Northern Ireland in the 1980's) it made me laugh out loud at some of the descriptions of the characters and their personalities. McKenna does an excellent job of captu
... morering the Irish dialect in her writing and I could hear the accents as I was reading the dialogue. I would also recommend her earlier novel "The Misremembered Man". less
