review 1: Very poetic prose in a haunting, disturbing look into family, myth, religion & love. The chapters from the point of view of the youngest daughter Yllis reminded me of the book A Mango-Shaped Space because she has the gift (or curse) of being able to see and smell emotions--her opening chapter describing different emotions she sees is my favorite. Her ability to see the emotional truth contrasted against appearances adds depth to all that happens throughout the book.
review 2: Could have been so much worse. Wasn't nearly as predictable as other books I've read this summer. As for the cover that other readers mention - I didn't pick the book for the cover as the girl is NOT holding an Amaryllis. Instead it looks to be more of a silk gerber daisy. And as a garden
... moreer, this drove me nuts. The characters fleshed out ok, the story was interesting enough to finish the book and the author's writing good enough to make me interested in her first book. less
