review 1: Positively Mine is a story about a college girl who got pregnant and forced to make decisions she wasn't prepared for. It's a story about growing up, struggling with day-to-day reality of unplanned pregnancy. I read Positively Mine a few months ago and was shocked by the effect it had on me. I couldn't even write a review because I was afraid it'd be too emotional. Maybe because it's beautifully written, and you can feel the write's voice and can't help loving it. And the characters are so real and familiar, they could be your neighbors. And maybe because I know way too well how to it feels to get pregnant while you're at school and scared to tell your parents. I was with Laurel all the way throughout the book, struggling with accepting and dealing with the consequences of... more one night. There is also a mystery about the baby's father. I was dying to know who he was and why Laurel wouldn't share the news with him. I totally got the part why she struggled with telling her father (who wouldn't?). Her relationship with her father is complicated; she finds it hard to open up to him, especially learning about how he's been moving on with his life after she left for college. I remember finishing this book in one sitting and telling my daughter that it should be read by every teen girl. It could be a real eye opener about how real this situation feel. I have to warn all cliffhanger haters, there is a huge cliffhanger at the end. But as much as I usually dislike those, the way Christine Duval wrote it makes you hope for something good to happen. And if I wasn't convincing enough that this book is a great read... I read it 7 months ago and must have read at least a hundred other books after. But I remember Positively Mine as if I read it yesterday. I received a copy of this book from the author in the exchange for the honest review. This didn't affect my opinion and the above review.
review 2: Freshman Forty begins with the confirmation of Laurel's pregnancy and her ensuing confusion about the many decisions facing her. On the whole I felt Christine Duval dealt with the situation well and for the most part I sympathised with Laurel, however I though Christine Duval was excessive with the angst where the relationship with Laurel's father was concerned. There is repetition about conversations and emotions between them which unfortunately did detract from my enjoyment of the story.I really liked how Christine Duval built Laurel's support system, only adding a hint at romance. She reveals how important friends can be and the other characters are really adorable. The ending of Freshman Forty is strong, and although it leaves the reader hanging I think we also see Laurel's maturity. I know I will be picking up the sequel! less
