review 1: Hmmm... after reading Brookmyre's excellent Parlabane novella "The Last Day of Christmas", I thought I'd dip in to some of his other stuff. I've flirted with his writing but never been committed and this one reminded me why. The story takes half the book to get going and there's a plethora of characters, some relevant and others less so, to the extent that there's a bit of flipping back and forth involved. The denouement is fine, but a wee bit obvious and the last quarter zips along nicely. As usual there are nods to various cultural references that only Scots of a certain age and socio-economic profile would get, which in Iain Banks writing is endearing, but somehow less so in Chris's. I'd like to like it more... sorry.
review 2: I didn't realize I was rea
... moreding Book Three in a trilogy until I was sunk into the plotting, characters and language of a new author. It surely would have been easier to have started at the beginning, let the characters develop and have the backstory in mind. On the upside, I didn't have any of Brookmyre's other books to compare this to--the dialogue and wry bits were quite delicious, and if the plotting was convoluted and the Big Reveal at the end less thrilling, reading this one was enough to send me to the library to check out other titles not in the series. less
