review 1: A sucker for unique takes on mythology, this book was a natural fit for me. I'm also easily lost if the mythology, surprise, language, characters and plotline don't hold up. Wendig does a beautiful job of giving us gods with a mingling of human and godly problems, as well as his signature HOLY SHIT moments that make his novels addictive. I appreciated the backstory riddled throughout for all of the characters, giving me the richness of storyline necessary in a novel with a grandiose frame like this one. The relationships and characters are what drive the story, however, and Wendig never loses sight of the importance of the human element and characters that make things happen, even when gods are pulling their strings. I thoroughly enjoyed it and can't wait for the next inst... moreallment given to us by Stephen Blackmoore.
review 2: I actually did like a lot about this book. All in all, the supporting characters are much more interesting than Cason, the main character. The book is the same style of urban fantasy as Richard Kadrey's "Sandman Slim" series, except James Stark has a backbone and Cason, well he just spends most of the book getting his ass kicked (I don't think he wins a fight the entire book), which is sad for a character whose past involved being a professional fighter...Charming in spots, but the ending is rather abrupt with little closure. less

Reminded me a little of the sandman slim novels. Also a little Gaiman in there. But fun read!

Another masterwork from Chuck Wendig. How did this bastard get all the awesomeness?

Brilliant book. My one complaint is that it ends very suddenly.
