review 1: For return readers, the bottom line is, if you liked the Black Ops Inc series then you're going to like this one. And for new readers, it's a great introduction to Gerard's style. She delivers plenty of strong--yet flawed--characters and, given the space a single book allows, I think she does a good job of character development. I find Eva and Mike to be likeable and relatable (even though I'm nothing like the strong, kick-ass Eva, I can see myself being friends with her). And the 'guest appearances' by some of the BOIs and even a mention of the Bodyguards was just an added bonus for me. Can't wait to read more of this series!
review 2: Mike "PrimeTime" Brown from the Black Ops Inc series marks the anniversary of losing his brethren in combat, his career and l
... moreife as he knew it with an annual challenge to sobriety. On the eighth year, just to add a little spice to the celebration he catches and is caught by the eye of Eva Salinas working undercover. Unknown to Mike, Eve is the widow of one of his fallen comrades and she wants justice. After convincing Mike it's the right thing to do, Mike and Eva decide to work together. In pooling their resources they provide a logical cameo link to BOI and perhaps tip their hand to the enemy that wants them both dead. For this origin story not only is the typical handsome, protective male front and center but he has company in the form of a counterpart female. The heat between these Eva and Mike sizzles even when they aren't on the page. Mike strongly steps in the spotlight and shines brightly as he strikes every desirable leading man characteristic and builds on his personable and likeable secondary character persona. Eve is smart, capable, independent, sexy and every bit as alpha as Mike. Though the cameo from Gabe and mentions of other team members link this installment to the Black Ops Inc series, this read includes a couple of new characters not associated with BOI helping to strengthen the foundation of a separate series. The shadowy villains including the henchmen keep the tension level taut as they are diabolical in carrying out their nefarious secret master plan. There was plenty to like here for the romantic suspense fan. The complicated road to romance was a justified reason instead of a contrived situation. Both the primary and secondary characters were well developed. The plot, pacing, writing style and storyline were tight with no dead end commentary taking away from the main storyline. A notable villain with a plan that took a couple of convoluted turns. This reader was excited by them all. Overall, this maiden mission was a great success and a fun read. It definitely pushed all my buttons and I'm excited to see where the next installment takes me. less

Not quite as good as The Way Home. A change for me as I usually stick with historical romance
