review 1: C.J. Pinard gifted this book to me in exchange for a review. This is probably one of the hardest reviews I have ever had to write. Unfortunately, while the grammar, sentence structure and punctuation were great in this book, the story line fell short for me. I felt that the characters did not have much depth. Although the book jumped from past to present a lot, it did not provide much for character development. The book did not hold my attention well given that I had to keep re-reading parts to recall how things fit together.I like that C.J. made drew the past and present together through Thomas and his father and that part of the story line resolved well. I did have a hard time tracking the parts of the story around Pascal, the sylphs and the wolves, I think that is also ... morebecause in the beginning of a book I like to see some descriptors of what the author sees that each preternatural consists of. I did not feel that there was a good descriptor of sylphs other than that they make something that the immortals need.I hope that the next books in this series expand on these characters so that they all tie together. I am hoping to see more back story on Jonathon, Katherine, and Tony to learn how they all became who they are (immortality).
review 2: Ms. Carolyn Johnson Pinard has proved a great writing style as far as I've read. She has created original characters and give them such full personalities that I've been able to give them a face and a life in my mind. I'm still discovering the geography of the world and times in this book... but I believe it will be a treat after the tragedies of the last book I read. I'm already trapped in the webs of letters and print in this book. Each of the characters I've met till now have perfectly well defined personalities and I feel like I've known them for a while. I love the way I can understand their feelings just by their attitudes and actions. The author has a wonderful narration expressing emotions and connecting them to the reader. And when I finally got to the end of it, it's not really the end, I now have... must read Enchanted Immortals 2: The vortex. As I said before, I love these characters and I need to know more about them... plus... who knows where their relationships will take us. less
