review 1: I was completely enamored of this author after reading her short story "Foster", which was included in a compilation of works featured in the Best American Short Stories 2011. Her writing was so real, her descriptive narrative so effective that I felt as though I was IN the story, interacting with her characters instead of reading about them. Her dialogue especially was written so naturally, the story was never interrupted by choppy, contrived conversations that, when not written well, can unfortunately disrupt the flow of an otherwise good piece of writing. I highly recommend "Foster", followed up by reading this author's other published writings. A real treasure.
review 2: When I'd finished Claire Keegan's short novella FOSTER, I did something I haven't do
... morene in a while... I dried my eyes and started to read it again from the beginning. The brilliance of this 88 page story is its simplicity. The author will describe place and people in a straightforward manner and then without warning lay down a line or two that will tear your heart out. This is the story of a young girl from a growing, poor Irish family who is sent to live with an aunt and uncle in a nearby county while her own mother prepares for the birth of her fifth child. The girls mother flippantly tells the girl, "they can keep you as long as they want." The girl is dropped off by her father who does not say goodbye and leaves her without even a change of clothes. For the first time the girl experiences deep affection and love from two people who were quiet and sad at first and then gradually full of life as they impact one another's lives. In her new surroundings over a summer, the girl, whom the uncle affectionately calls Petal, comes to realize a very different life in a nurturing environment where she is properly raised, adequately fed, her grammar gently corrected, and taught patiently to read. A place where the simplest gesture or touch is soaked up hungrily by the love-starved child who blossoms and grows within the stories brief pages. To say much more on this too-short story would spoil it. I leave you to discover for yourself the tenderness the tale tells and the well-crafted words of this very gifted writer. less
