review 1: What an interesting look into the foster care system. A little girl is taken out of her home and placed with strangers. Her father dropped her off there and she had no idea how long she would be there. She finds warmth and compassion and begins to thrive. One day during a wake she goes with a neighbor lady who seems to be the town gossip. The lady asks her a ton of questions about her new home and how things are there. The girl does not know how to answer to anything but honestly. She learns that the couples boy had died and this changes everything. I was so sad to read this and just think it is a reminder that even curious questions can be harmful to a young child. She ends up going back to her family, but runs to give the foster dad a huge hug. This almost broke my heart... more. That she left a loving environment to go back to a family that is too busy and too broke to provide much. The author does not discuss whether there is love or not in the original home. The dad tells the foster dad that she is a hard worker and tries to tell him she will be helpful. Thank goodness the foster parents had no ill will and no intention of harming her. It was a glimpse into a life and how she may be forever changed due to the love and generosity of the foster family.
review 2: * I listened to an audio abridged by Neville Teller and have not read the book. But now I want to go get a copy of the actual text. I have a funny feeling that first extending a short story into a short novel and then abridging said short novel has not done any good to Keegan's story or prose, which, I have no doubt, I will love even more than I love Evanna Lynch's voice narrate this bleakishly cute little piece of art.(If the actual thing really can be described that way; I have frankly no idea what to expect of it.) less

A novella-length version of a short story I loved in The New Yorker. A tear-jerker for sure.
Ukulele
Un roman très court, très doux. Des liens se tissent. Chacun s'apprivoise.
