review 1: Didn't particularly enjoy this one. While it had some elements that I like in general - fantasy quest story, main character coming into newly discovered magical abilities - it just didn't work for me, and at times was a bit too weird for my tastes. Were it not a book club selection, I probably would have put it aside early on, but will say that I was satisfied with how everything wrapped up in the end.
review 2: Perfect pacing and characterization! Clarie Legrand has a really eloquent writing style, and there were just enough nods to The Nutcracker to make me feel a little giggly whenever I recognized them. Anise was an incredible antagonist, and Clara one of the best fleshed out female protags from a YA novel I've read in a while. My only complaint was that th... moreere wasn't enough romance! Hopefully Claire Legrand will write a short story about Nicholas and Clara's reunion. less
