review 1: This one never really got off the ground for me. I loved the idea, but sadly I felt no real connection to either Aaron or Ethan. The basis was there, with Aaron’s insecurities and the boys he helped, but I never felt like we got the real story. Instead we get glimpses of things and then they are brushed aside as if they are unimportant. Great potential, but never made it work for me.
review 2: I have to admit that Ethan and Aaron took a while to get to know, and a little bit of effort to understand, but it was well worth it. In many ways my understanding of them grew as they got to know each other better and that was a rather interesting experience. I liked both of them from the start, and the "challenge" for a Don Juan-like character like Ethan to convince
... more a nerd like Aaron to go out with him was not inconsiderable. Ethan seems like a pretty clear-cut character. He likes 'the chase' more than being in a relationship, he is self-confident, and his reputation as master of the one-nighter precedes him. Except – he is no longer that interested. Meeting Aaron makes him think. Not only is he attracted to the sociology TA, the guy gives him a run for his money – in a good way. Ethan finds out how hard it is to change people's perceptions. Good thing he's a stubborn man!Aaron may be nerdy and on the shy side of withdrawn where his own relationships are concerned, but he knows what he wants. He is no pushover, and that made me like him a lt. Luckily for Ethan, he is also fair, and even though he makes Ethan fight for every inch, he does give him a chance. That is far more than many people would do! The fact that he works with underprivileged kids just made me love him all the more; it proves he isn't just a "theoretical sociologist", he practices what he has learned. This story, while talking about some deeper truths like overcoming prejudice and supporting the values of tolerance and acceptance for people with very different personalities than our own, is also a lot of fun to read. If you like opposites figuring out they are actually attracted to each other. If you enjoy a nerdy guy and a Casanova battling it out, and if you can't wait for them to become a lovign couple, then you will probably like this book. less
