review 1: This is a pleasant novella, easily digestible in a single reading. Willis incorporates many references to Broadway plays and musicals, and the entire story is a riff on "All About Eve," only with a AI understudy. Many of Willis' novels and stories deal with deep themes and contain strong emotional resonance; this story, by contrast, seems intended mainly for entertainment and will be best enjoyed by readers who have an appreciation for robot stories and musicals, an odd, though unique, target audience. A consumer note: the $20 cover price for this hardbound edition seems a bit steep for a story that is less than 100 pages (and printed in large font, as well). The book is presumably marketed to the SF collector, rather than the casual reader. (I read a library c... moreopy.)
review 2: What starts out as a tale about an aging actress afraid the innocent looking Emily will replace her, turns into a story about free will and Broadway and what it means to be human. Being a novelette, this is a short and quick read. It is also delightfully fun with a smattering of pop culture references between bouts of witty humor. And though short and funny, Willis manages to delivery and emotional impact that had me crying at the end. Loved it. less

I'm a Connie Willis fan but this novella felt phoned in; definitely not one of her best.

I wanted more. I miss what Asimov did with robots.
