review 1: Not exactly what I was expecting...this really is a treatise on copyright laws and how they need to be updated for the Information Age. I had come into this book expecting more information on being an Internet entrepreneur and making a living as an independent artist with content online. There is a little bit of that here, but sadly nothing I hadn't already thought of. Very interesting historical perspectives on why copyright works the way it does and why many of these reasons are antiquated, but sadly I truly got the feeling reading it that Doctorow is preaching to the choir--it's difficult to imagine it'll be read by any outside the techno-literate and -active and thus not be much of a driver for real change.

... moreok at why it is not a good idea for the entertainment industry to control the internet and computer code. After all do we want Hollywood lawyers deciding what kind of computer programs are allowed to run everywhere, including in your car, the airplane you fly in or even your pacemaker? Do we want these Hollywood lawyers deciding who gets to use the internet, that's correct, they want the power to kick people off the internet for just BEING ACCUSED of violating a copyright with no trial, or recourse - unless of course you have your own legal team. less

Not a lightning bolt of unexpected information, but it reaches a powerful crescendo nonetheless.

A compelling and often chilling look at the stakes of copyright in the digital age. Great read.
