review 2: This is a bit of an odd beast. The majority of it is a novella, but it also includes an interview with Cory and a reworked speech of his, making for a pretty significant change in content and form three quarters of the way through the book. The majority of the book is the eponymous novella, which is a fascinating and rather different look at the future. Instead of one glorious utopia or dystopian nightmare, the world is suffering from what feels like the literal manifestation of memes; people throw random ideas out into the world without worrying about their ultimate impact, and the collision and reaction to each leads to a fragmented future, of which a few different manifestations are explored. The story focuses on Jimmy, an 'immortal' and his life as he goes through several different epochs. The fragmented nature of the world is a future that seems all too possible but not one I'd seen before, and I really liked it. The story such as it is doesn't do a whole lot, and ends before it feels like it should (although the ending makes sense), but it's still a worthwhile read. The lecture and interview are also very interesting - Doctorow's treatise on DRM and Copyright and how they don't support the artists is a distillation of many of his ideas, and much of it looks prescient considering the events of 2014. All told, this is a quick read that is definitely worth reading, not just for the unique story, but also for the perspective on the world of today. less
