review 1: Honestly, I'm not one for historical romance or time travel - but every now and again, you run across something written so well, you allow yourself to be transported within the book. Macy Lockhart is your average teenager. She's recently discovered her boyfriend of two years has been cheating on her - she's devastated. Her best friend helps her through it, they crush up old gifts and memorabilia, than take it to his place. The act definitely enlightened her soul. Upon her return home, her mother hands her a box that came while she was out. When she opens it, she finds a beautiful bloodstone. Unsure of what it means or who it's from, she takes it out to examine it... one touch brought back a thousand memories. She is Charmian. Keeper of the Order. Cleopatra's best friend an... mored most loyal confidant. She has to make sure they follow the Fates, even though she knows it's a suicide mission.
review 2: I'm not sure how to organize my review....this book is a historical romance, with some fantasy trappings. When it first starts out, you are with a teenage girl named Macy, who is going through a hard break up. And she's very much a teenage girl, with teenage issues and problems. And I was like....I'm not into this, and then you go to the past, with the much wiser, clearer-headed voice of Charmion. Who is whisked back to the past to fix problem in history. And this is where the plot seems, very murky to me, Charmion is someone who basically makes sure that people integral to history follow the course of the fates. In this case, her charge is Cleopatra. The storytelling between her and Cleopatra has a certain cadence, and it's interesting, it makes Cleopatra seem much less a cold historical figure and much more a person. Charmion has a lover herself, who, though it's not expounded on very much in this book, is her soulmate.Charmion begins to really doubt herself, as a passive figure, having to live and die over and over again as she goes through time (her other lives besides the one as Macy and the one with Cleopatra she does not remember) versus changing her world, and making the way she would like, saving the people she loves. It becomes very a very Star Trek "the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few" debate that she's up against.I felt the writing was good, and interesting, but the time travel, bloodstone parts of the book really seemed to be the weak links. They even got a few "do-overs" and resets when things went astray. And it wasn't clear who out of several antagonists, was the actual antagonist, the Fates, the ones trying to bring them down, how exactly was an evil malodorous eunuch the wrench in the spokes? I'm still not sure.I would be curious enough to check out the sequel however, which is one of the best honors I can bestow on a book : ) less
