review 1: I loved this book! It was a quick, no nonsense story about a mage and his quest for freedom from his oppressive master. He is led through a glacial mountain range by an experienced guide seeking refuge in a country where magic is tightly controlled and his life may be forfeit. Will he escape his master or give into the cravings that will damn his soul, turning him into the same monster he hides from?
review 2: It took me a little while to get into this story. It took what seemed an inordinate amount of time to get all of the characters' secrets out. Fine, if they are hiding them from each other. But switching viewpoints back and forth made the beginning drag. Once we have all of the relevant information, the story picks up, and by the end I was ready to dive in... moreto the next story. I liked the ambiguity of the morals of the main characters. Worth reading. less
