How to Train Your Dragon
review 1: What starts out as a search-and-rescue mission for Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III and the Vikings of Berk takes a twist when they end up being captured by the Uglithugs near the island of Berserk. And what the Uglithug leader, Ug, wants to know is: who has been writing love letters to her daughter. Hiccup discovers who it is and, to hide the culprit, says it was him. From then, he has to take on an impossible task posed by Ug and ends up getting captured by the Berserks. And it is here that he once again meets his arch-enemy, discovers a prophecy that may be about him, barely escape being eaten by a Seadragonus Giganticus Maximus and ends up freeing all the prisoners. But all is not well, for at the end of the story, Hiccup must prepare for what may be the ultimate battle of ... moresurvival between humans and dragons; a battle he must somehow prevent.
review 2: I admit, I was a little worried after the seventh book because it wasn't my favorite and I wondered if they were going to slowly decline in quality. After this latest installment, I am not worried. This may be one of the best ones yet. It involves viking love poetry, ghosts, kidnappings, fiances (real and pretend), a girl named Tantrum O'Ugerly (who is in love with the fiance before the fiance before last), a dragon with revenge in half its heart and the return of Hiccup's arch-nemesis. Has Hiccup's Hero luck run out, or will he save the day again? I highly recommend the audio of this book. Giggling to myself alone in the car happened on more than one occasion. Particularly in the part with the fiances (you betcha, yessirree). less

everytime i read this series, my reaction is like, "will alvin survived again?" and "omg alvin why you didn't die already!" and i got tired of it. it's really bother me that alvin didn't die, i know in the next book he will survive. again. but it makes this book interesting and i can't wait to read the next book!the illustration really suits the story. it made me thrilled when hiccup met alvin's mother. book 8 really explained why alvin become hiccup's arch enemy. i never regret reading this book, the book is definitely has much better plot than the movie!

We adore this series and Cowell hasn't yet disappointed. The kids had already read the book, but we recently listened to it together in the car 5-10 minutes at a time as we drive to and from school every day. It's clever, witty, silly, with a bit of gross thrown in for good measure. In short, perfect for kids (and their zany parents). p.s. David Tennant's reading of these books is fabulous!
