How to Train Your Dragon
review 1: This book is so far the most touching book I've ever read in the series. Throughout the series, Cowell has left clues in all of the books, waiting to unravel them in the end, letting the readers suspect but no quite grab the answer;making them wanting to keep reading. What I like about Cowell is that she fills her books with surprises, Cliffhangers and sharp turns. So it was a bit unexpected when she revealed a bit too much in the blurb. As the blurb says, it seems clear that someone would betray them. So the first person that got into my mind was Snotlout(without a doubt), the antagonist of the story...and I was right. But, as I read on, things take on an unexpected turn of events. Snotlout had joined Hiccup's side and didn't give away his escape and also helped him hold ... moreoff the witch's dragons..but got himself killed in return. Why I said this book was most touching is mainly because of Snotlout's death. It really seemed kind of unfair that Snotlout died by helping Hiccup but there's nothing I could do about that, right? When he died, Hiccup describes him like a flaming star;a star of goodness and light tumbling down into the abyss of the ocean. Before Snotlout died, Snotlout gave Hiccup his necklace-a star. Now Hiccup's an old man writing about his adventures, and says,"One day I saw a little gold on the edges, and then rubbed the black star. It turned gold-maybe Snotlout's right, Heroes are forever." And in the epilogue Hiccup said "Adieu, Snotlout. For I could not have done this without you." So now when I look back at the blurb, I know why it says 'who will betray them IN THE END?'Well, that's for the twelfth book to reveal.
review 2: Just awesome! Impeccable writing? Check. Humour? Check. Good plot with everything coming together at the end even though not always in the favour of the characters? Check.I like how there is nothing that makes you think: "Hey! That couldn't happen to Y because then X would just swoop in and do this or that." You know what I mean?Instead everything that is laid out at the beginning fits with everything else in the end, like: "No, X had to go to that other place in order to that thing that let to the incident that shaped the circumstances for Y. Making it completely natural that Y gets out of a certain predicament with the help of this and that". This is not a weird retelling of events from the book. I am just trying to explain myself and doing a horrible job at it. :S :PSome spoilers ahoy!In addition to being awesome, this book also tries to teach us/kids that people are usually bad for a reason and that they can be good if given the chance, and it does a wonderful job of it, if somewhat sad. I never thought I would cheer for Snotlout. And feel so sorry for him. And MISS him, even.I can really recommend this book, along with all the others in the series, of course. less
