review 1: Había leído otra obra de Aira, Cómo me hice monja, y me había parecido muy buena novelita, pero algunas de las cosas que me habían parecido divertidas en aquella no me agradaron tanto en ésta. Para empezar, la imaginación se desborda en esta novela con exageraciones y eventos fantasiosos que terminan por aburrir, de hecho me pareció una novela ridícula y simplona. Son tantas las cosas que suceden y una tras otra y están narradas de manera tan superficial y rápida que no logra uno, o por lo menos nunca logré yo, asir la novela, asir algo, una especie de trama, de modo que el efecto era más bien caricaturesco como en las caricaturas infantiles. Quizá en el fondo, muy en el fondo, como para los que quieran detenerse en ello o les interese creer en ello, hay un ... moreelemento alegórico qué explorar, quizá. Lo único que tiene a su favor es la ironía de la voz narradora y algún que otro comentario inteligente que podría hacerme considerar, tal vez, subir mi calificación de 2 a 3 estrellas.
review 2: I love Cesar Aira's writing. This short little book is allegedly about the author's visit to a literary conference in a beautiful resort, at which he is secretly running a cloning machine. The aim of the machine is to duplicate his favorite author, Carlos Fuentes. But the machine goes horribly awry, producing monsters which threaten the existence of the town.Read on this level, the book is an amusing little romp -- very funny, like a comic science fiction novel. But on another level, the book is about the danger of translation, where the cloning machine -- designed to translate the DNA of Carlos Fuentes into more perfect copies of Fuentes -- is easily pushed into error, and produces monstrous errors that destroy everything around them. As an English-speaking reader, at this point, you sit, reading your translation of Aira and wonder -- have I understood him correctly? Or have I been captured by the monster? less
