review 1: I have to admit that after reading a Phillipa Gregory novel about Catherine of Aragon, the first wife of Henry VIII, I was curious about Isabella. In that book, which is historical fiction, Catherine writes to her mother a few times for advice, but Isabella comes off as cold, distant, and as a warrior queen. C.W. Gortner gives the reader some historical background about Isabella's early childhood, her meeting with Ferdinand, to her reign as Queen of Spain. Columbus makes an appearance, along with the Inquisition, and the expulsion of the Moors from Spain. A pretty exciting life for a mere woman. This was a good read for all history buffs.
review 2: This historical novel depicts Queen Isabella of Castile. She is historically known for expelling Jews from Spain
... more(or at the very least, insisting that they become Christian), marrying a man of her choice vs. someone chosen for royal political purposes & the discovery of the new world. Her character is very well developed and we learn that it is very complicated to be a royal leader in the 1400's. Despite being such as forward thinker in some ways she was also narrow minded in others. A contradiction of terms--so common in the human species... I wonder if anything has changed in the world of royalty? less
