review 1: Great, quick read about a 12-year-old girl and her relationships with her hard-working immigrant grandparents and (autistic?) younger brother during wheat-harvesting season. I learned a lot about Japanese-American culture and wheat harvesting, both of which were more interesting than you might think. I also thought the author did a great job of building tension near the end. I was so invested in the outcome, and worried for the main character, that my heart was in my throat during certain scenes.
review 2: The Thing about Luck taught me a lot about a life of a wheat farmer, which is something I had never thought about or heard of before. Hearing the hard work of a farmer from the view of a girl my age showed me that not everyone is as lucky to have a life like ... moremine. I would rate it three stars because I really liked reading about a wheat farmer, and a girl who once had malaria, but I wouldn't rate it five stars because I didn't love the plot or the writing style. less
