review 1: A detective story where the main character doesn't know all, or even solve the case, where the reader isn't quite sure how (or who) actually committed the crime and no one is certain is justice is had. Novel, in that this is in the words of the book, "writing, not literature", an expression of true life, rather than how things should go. It was just 'meh' for me. I get the feeling some things were lost in translation.
review 2: Always on the look out for new international crime fiction, this is the first mystery I have read from Israel. It definitely won't be the last I read from Mishani, that is for certain. In this story a mother reports her teenage son missing and though the police think nothing is wrong, it soon becomes clear that he will not be coming h... moreome. The detective, Avraham Avraham is tortured by guilt that he did not act soon enough. At the same time a neighbor involves himself in the case in an unsettling way. It is a gripping read. I really appreciated the psychological aspects of this story, the humanity of Avraham, the parallel points of view, and the unsettling ending. Avraham and Mishani clearly owe a debt to Kurt Wallander and his creator Henning Mankell, but there is enough originality to make this a character and a series I will eagerly follow.--BW less
