review 1: I feel like I start out so many of my reviews with "I really wanted to like this book, but...." And this one is another to add to the list. I was looking forward to a book where the characters aren't 20 somethings. This book wasn't awful, but it wasn't great. The characters are flat and each one fits into a stereotypical box. We have a cougar, a gay bff couple, an overworked Republican business man, and a stay at home mom. The main character was hiding from life on the island for some reason I never fully grasped. I didn't understand the main conflict between Maggie & Gill. Their big mix-up in the past seemed like it could have been solved with a simple phone call or letter--I don't understand how it lasted 22 years. The conversations between these characters were en... moredless. I felt like I was spending the long weekend listening to every conversation they had. There was so much that could have been trimmed. By then end of the book, I was skimming pages and pages of conversation.
review 2: I really want to give this a higher rating but god Maggie was so annoying with running away several times on Gil. Instead of stating her fears and trusting him she would freak out and leave. Regardless of that fuckery, I really loved the story. The setting ( I so want to live in a place like that, all secluded and islandy), the friendships, and food, oh god and Gil :)And I liked Maggie until after she slept with Gil then she got on my fucking nerves with her obnoxious freaking out. He laid it all out for her and what does she do? Literally runs away from him and acts like an immature child, refusing to talk about her fears and instead of listening to him rationally she makes up ridiculous excuses as to why they wouldn't work out. That got old real quick.Oh and another thing that pissed me off was her pity party of not having Gil! Umm pendeja you were the one who just wanted to be friends so I do not feel bad for you at all and I'm glad you realize what a tonta you've been. That was a self induced heartbreak that was so fucking unnecessary so get out of my face with that bull shit. Now back to what I loved: the reminiscing of their college days and just all the love you could feel from them. I think that was my biggest like aside from Gil and the setting, just that feeling you got while reading this book is not something you can easily come by. It was one of those feelings of coming back home after a really long break, just so cozy. And Selah we fucking get it they are gay and having a child go be a bitter single shit somewhere else. less
