review 1: I picked this novella up this evening and just put it down (it's midnight) and wow. Totally engrossing, clearly and some passages that are so in tune with where I am in life right about now (physically, I am traveling; but also emotionospiritually too / forgive the portmanteau!). Just shy of perfect. The inability of the characters in the first two parts of the novella to actually physically connect really shits me. Although as a gay man I know only too well the reservations and shyness that acting on urges sometimes brings up. If it would let me do a half star I would.
review 2: I was given this book by a stranger on the street. He said that he was clearing out his collection of books in order to travel abroad. He tole me it was his favorite novel, and wrote ... morea dedication on the first page. I read it indeed, and it didn't leave much of an impression on me. But as time passes, I realize how deeply it made me feel an intensity of life, thoughts, awakening. It's a beautiful experience. less
