review 1: The writing is not so bad, but the story disappears completely under the porn. The use of September 11th as a pathos point made be seriously ill-at-ease, and I'm not even American. The characters were seriously unlovable, Griff has no backbone at all, Dante is just awful, and the way his "generosity" is used to justify all his actions is in really bad taste. The story is bloody long, not in a good way. I love long stories, this one just felt horribly slow, full of useless parts, and the sex scenes are just dirty, but not in a good way either. It didn't feel sexy, it felt blunt. This one was definitely not for me. Edit: Just needed to add that the Fatshaming is strong in this one, and that at several places being fat=being a disgusting pervert, or not able to attract an... moreyone.
review 2: GOT IT RIGHT!*NO Spoilers*As a former gay military vet, with gay firefighter buddies, this novel blew me away. Accurate lingo. Dead on portrayals of firefighters. Props to Suede for making the two lead firefighters fall in love without schmaltzy crap that rings false. This read like two, real buddies who helplessly find their "bromance" being kicked up a notch. (WAY up.) Nailed Brooklyn. Nailed 9/11. (Respect!) And, of course, our heroes nailed each other. The crazy sexual tension and self-doubt, even after having sex, was perfectly written. (So been there.) Books in the genre don't get much better than this! less
