review 1: fascinating look at why we may lie and cheat, and how we can help make it better ... or worse. While I can't say if the tests had a large enough sample to be valid, the conclusions pass the smell test. In general, we aren't "rational actors" (good) and our general nature is to cheat - a little - especially if we think it won't hurt someone. How Professor Ariely got there, the lovely conclusions he draws and the generally fun style of the book made for a great story. I listened to this on audio book and the reader is Arthur Dent! Truly a brilliant casting choice.
review 2: This book is funny but not informative or useful. I was looking for a book to help me swallow some of the dishonest behavior around me with a bit of humor. But this book was not the answer: Th
... moree author managed to gain funding to conduct experiments on students, testing attributes not necessarily synonymous with honesty such as discipline, ethics, authenticity ... etc.. I think the ideas are interesting but conclusions are anecdotal and the methods far from rigorous. I accepted the book as a comical rather than an informational book. At some point I felt impatient with the book ( examples for those who read it: when the author talked about the disproportionately high incidence of grandmother deaths around finals which naturally would mean that students are trying to get some leniency from the professor on grading or deadlines for submission. He does not cut to the chase and say that the death of a grandma is an irrelevant topic between the student and professor outside of finals and that it is highly likely that students could make it up to get out of taking a final exam and rather goes on to discuss a differential for the possibilities of why grandmas die in the finals which I think was facetious and cocky). At some points I felt the author did not care about wasting the readers' time with anecdotes and jokes. less

Somewhat interesting but feels like a rehash of something he wrote before.
