Book review: The Order, by Balak, Michaël Sanlaville, and Bastien Vivès, translated by Alexis Siegel

Balak, Michaël Sanlaville, and Bastien Vivès. Last Man #5 – The Order. Trans. By Alexis Siegel. First Second/Roaring Brook, 2016. $9.99. 207p. ISBN 978-1-62672-050-3. Ages 14+. P7Q9

The Tournaments for fighters Richard and teen Adrian continue, and Adrian’s mother Marianne join them in the struggle after she and Adrian were a duo in the metropolis of Paxtown. This French series continues with #6 (978-1-62672-051-0) in which Richard saves Marianne and Adrian only to lose them again. Readers would benefit from exploring this series from the first volume, but the books can be read alone. The excellent characterization is enhanced for teen readers with wild action, and the plot, moved by dialog, contributes to the complexity of the authors’ SF world. The black and white drawings add to the nuances of facial expressions and body language.

Verdict: A great addition for libraries where younger readers want to move forward from the Hilo and Bones series.
