review 1: There were some things I really liked about this book, but overall it left me feeling like it was a bit average. I liked the premise, main character (especially his internal struggle), and general plot. My main complaint were that I wasn't a big fan of the "bad guy" and who he was. But I did like that the main character behaved reasonably logically in the situations he was put in. I also felt it was a bit too much like Dexter and felt a bit like a rip-off. I did enjoy those parts, but it was a bit too familiar for me.
review 2: John Wayne Clever is fifteen-years-old and is dangerous. A diagnosed sociopath who, thanks to the help of his therapist, tries to live a normal life. As normal as any boy obsessed with serial killers, and lives above a funeral home
... morecan be of course. John believes he is fated to become a serial killer, but for the sake of himself and those around him he made a list of rules to live by. But those rules are put to the test, as it seems that a serial killer has moved into his quiet little town. Soon after as the bodies start to pile up, John becomes obsessed with the serial killer. Trying to find out anything he can about the killer. One day he witnesses a strange man in town traveling with one of his elderly neighbours and follows them, thinking that the stranger is the murderer he plans to save his neighbour. But all is not what is seems for John, and soon he has to fight his internal demons as well as a very real external one. This book I picked up with out any prior knowledge of it. No one recommended it, and no one spoilt it for me. So I am a little hesitant to describe any sort of plot points that may spoil it for other. At first I thought that this novel was going to be a teen mystery novel with serial killers, but as I kept reading I found myself hooked into it. Thanks to not having any prior knowledge, I was able to enjoy every surprise and turn. Even though John is a sociopath, he still struggles with the agony of not being able to make a normal human connection. I found myself feeling sorry for John, as you can feel his frustrations on not being able to feel ‘normal’. But as the novel progressed, John’s character begins to deteriorate and not for the better. As his obsession to destroy the monster that had been hunting the people in his town begins to grow so do his homicidal urges. Eventually he lets go of his rules and walls he built to keep his own monster under control, and soon lets it out on the demon haunting the streets. The ending is open, that leads into the next two books in the trilogy, and it left me wanting to find out what happens to John. So I may need to find the next few in the series. This Young Adult thriller was just the right tone for me, with plenty of mystery and a plot twist that I’m still reeling over. less
