review 1: I enjoyed this book very much. I thought it was a very sweet and touching story of family tradition being passed down from generation to generation. Not only was tradition passed down through a physical object (the little shovel) but also family values (working hard) were passed down as well throughout the book. I really enjoyed the fact that this was written by the great grandson of the first character in this book. He said that everything in the book really did happen and I thought it was a cute tribute to his family. Dan Yaccarino, the author, made this book appealing when he compared his great grandfather coming to America to himself when he left his family to move to the city to become an author. I would definitely recommend this book to others especially to tea... morechers to read to their class. I think this book would be a perfect read aloud for a 2nd grade classroom. The book focused on the passing down of traditions and did so in a repetitive pattern, I think this would be a good book to do a close read on and pull out writing strategies from it and possibly have the students try to come up with their own traditions that may have been passed down over the years through their family. I also like the culture that is mixed in as well. Dan Yaccarino comes from an Italian family and it would be great to use this book to talk about Italy and Italian traditions and even the idea of immigration and what his great grandfather would have went though. There is a lot of educational value in this book which is why I would use this book in my classroom.
review 2: "All the Way to America..." is the story of many generations and a small shovel. The story was written and illustrated by Dan Yaccarino. He tells the story of his great-grandfather and his journey to America. His great-grandfather brings a little shovel with him and he passes on the shovel throughout generations. He talks about how the shovel was used differently throughout those generations and how the shovel, in a sense, brought success and happiness to the family. Yaccarino states at the end of his story that no matter his success he will always remember his family. I think the story was inspirational; how the various generations came above all odds and were successful in their own unique was. The illustrations are enjoyable and if you look closely you can see the little shovel in almost every page. I would use this book in my classroom because it is an easy read book and it is not too long where the kids might begin to lose interest. The pictures are interesting and I believe it would be of help when teaching about immigration and the success stories behind it. less
