review 1: Violet Raines, headstrong and a free spirited girl who enjoyed every second of life. But everything changed when a new neighbor moved in. Malissa Gold, came from a big city called Detroit. All of a sudden, Violet is having the urge to wear make-up and "fangirl" over boys? It'll take a lot of help from Violet's friends and family to help Violet realize that growing up doesn't mean that you have to change who you are. I'm very similar to Violet Raines in many ways. We're almost the same because Violet changed when a new neighbor moved in. My story is, I have many friends that I kinda want to be like. For example, when I make a new friend and he/she seems kinda "better" than me. I feel like I need to change something about me to be like him/her. But later at the end, I realiz... moree that you don't have to change to be perfect. I would recommend this book to an audience who thinks they need to change to be like someone their not. For instance, some people change because they feel like they're not pretty enough or someone is better than them. I'm here to say that changing yourself won't make you any better. It would just make you look "fake." So if the audience reading this book, and is thinking about changing, they don't have to change to be perfect.
review 2: Danette Haworth's "Violet Raines Almost Got Struck by Lightning" intrigued me with its best-friend-stealer and drama. Violet is a girl who's about 12 and lives in a small town with her family and best friend's family. She enjoys watching for alligators and playing with Lottie, her best friend.Violet is the main character who is happy with her life. She has friends named Lottie, whose real name is Charlotte, and Eddie, who likes doing the outside-activities with her. Lottie is fun, and has 3 sisters. She is a believable character. Eddie is the boy-next-door type of character. He collects cans with her to get a free slushie, and goes to the creek to look for alligators with her. Classic boy. Melissa comes in, who is girly and Violet doesn't like her from the start. Melissa enjoys magazines, hair, nails and make-up. All of these characters seem to come to life in the book- and you can just see them in your mind. I can almost picture the setting- the houses, the creek, all of it. The author really describes it well- to a point where you almost feel like you're there spectating. I can picture when the lightning strikes Lottie's house. I can picture the burnt walls of the house. Danette Haworth makes you want to scream at the book. :D You want to scream if her life doesn't get better soon.Melissa comes in and tries to automatically become Lottie's best friend. Violet sees Melissa in the act of taking Lottie away from her and Melissa is starting to change Lottie-for the worse. She silently hopes that Lottie will snap out of it- and realize who's a better best friend- Violet, not Melissa. Which one will be Lottie's best friend? The girly, New Yorker one with the make-up or the small-town girl with the fun times? This is a great book. I think most girls would like this book- some would be able to connect to it. Boys wouldn't really be "into it," I don't think. This is a great book. I think you (if you're a girl,) should read it, too. less

A sweet coming of age story for girls who aren't sure what comes after elementary school.

o.k. Since I like realistic fiction, i tthought it was good, but not great.

Cute! Although the ending didn't wrap up all of the loose ends.
