review 1: A true 4.5, a riveting novel and a brilliantly conceived world that would've been a 5 but for some flat characters.Reading as many dystopian novels as I have can be exhausting - the stark and/or brutal nature of the world's end can become as dreary, slow, plodding, downright zombified. Wilson's writing is energetic but evocative, and the plot zips along but the prose isn't dumbed down, and though the characters aren't fully fleshed out, they aren't stilted and they feel real, albeit undeveloped. If this were a movie, it'd be "a smart blockbuster" - it has pulp aspects, it is driven by a great concept executed well, but the characters are recognizable human beings. It reads SUPER fast, I took it down in like 3 days and couldn't put it down. Wilson's understanding of robo... moretics lends some authenticity and makes this a more realized apocalypse than most - there is an urgency and level of smart detail to the collapse of humanity that is often ignored in After The End novels. I needed a palate cleanser after reading some stiff nonfiction and heavy novels, and this was a great reset where I could soak up a fast-moving plot without reading something where the writing was so dumb it killed brain cells.Definitely recommended for anyone who enjoys post-apocalyptic stories or crisp pop fiction.
review 2: LOVED this book!! Told as a series of reports after a world-wide "robo" war, this book reminded me of World War Z, another favorite of mine. It opens with the discovery of a "black box" left behind by the robot mastermind which the narrator of the story uses as a way to look back and remember or recount all the important events in the narrow human victory. (BTW, that's not a spoiler since we are told from the very beginning of the book that the humans were victorious.) This book has a great creepy and foreboding sense about it from the very start and it holds the tension through out. The ending is satisfying, but leaves a tiny sliver of a chance for a sequel. less

One of the best descriptions of how a robot uprising could realistically happen.
