review 1: I've been on a bit of a decision-making reading bender lately, this is the third book on how our brains work that I've read (listened to) recently. What is fascinating to me is that, even KNOWING that our brains work this way rarely changes how we react to queues in our environment. Kahneman strikes me as someone good to have at a dinner party - full of interesting stories and games to test you with. He has won a Nobel Prize in Economics, a fact he mentioned a few times throughout the book. At first that struck me as somewhat pretentious, but - how else am I to know that he is a highly qualified expert on the subject than to have him tell me? Thinking Fast and Slow - with intuition and with input from conscious thought.

... moreou look at how you look at the world. This Nobel-prize-winning economist studies behavior choices. Why do we make the choices we do? There are simple places you recognize yourself, as when you respond to a different question than the one that was asked. Our brains are lazy; they want the easy way out. So they'll choose to respond with something they do know rather than going to the effort if looking for an answer they probably don't know. And how about how we are averse to giving up something we have, even when something of same value is offered? Their research said it would take a much higher value to get people to give up the sure thing they hold. Also fascinating: the skewed odds that people will accept or choose, because we are so drawn to the sure thing. I was surprised, but thirdly recognized myself, in the part about small odds being overvalued. Wording also pacts choices, but we knew that. Only down side? A little repetitive. But push on through, and it will stick you a long time. less
