review 1: Another timeless mystery in the most excellent du Maurier style of "Rebecca". Philip's beloved uncle Ambrose leaves Cornwall for Florence & dies there. When he arrives, cousin Rachel, the wife of Ambrose, has disappeared & mystery surrounds it all. She later comes to Cornwall, to the ancestral home & inevitabley Philip becomes enamored. The mystery surrounding her never leaves, however, & deftly takes you to the very last page.
review 2: This is a re-read from a long time ago. I'm so glad I read it again ! Wow, what a story !Philip is being raised by his much older cousin, Ambrose ,who is a confirmed bachelor in his early 40's. They have led a very peaceful life in a big old mansion . As the story begins, Ambrose is preparing for a trip to Italy to possibly
... more find some new plants to have sent back to their estate . He loves gardening and is always on the lookout for new foliage . While he is gone, he writes frequently to Philip, but as time goes by , the letters become less ,and then they begin sounding very worrisome. Philip is worried about Ambrose's health, so he leaves to go find Ambrose and bring him home . What he finds is a terrible shock ,with more shocks to follow .Something from Ambrose's time in Italy resurfaces in Philip' life, and soon, he becomes prey to the same situation that Ambrose did .A VERY good book . I used to think that Rebecca was the better of the two, but I'm almost inclined to say they are tied at this point . 5/5 less

Daphne du Maurier is a master story teller. In the first chapter you already know something is going to happen, the description of a hung man who had murdered his wife, and the one sentence 'Was Rachel guilty or innocent?' say enough. Philip Ashley is going to teach cousin Rachel a lesson, but everything changes when he actually meets her. It is quite interesting how the story is written through the eyes of Philip, and how you, as reader, see him differently then he sees himself. It is definitely a page turner...

I loved this, the whole feel was so eerie and menacing and Cornwall so bleak and harshly beautiful. I didn't see the ending coming at all and it really shocked me. I loved the writing, what an artist Du Maurer was, weaving such atmosphere with her words, wonderful. I was impressed at how she got into the male lead's mind and described such powerful emotions, whereas Rachel really was quite a blank page. Very clever.
