review 1: This was such a surprise, not least because I thought I had heard of all du Maurier's books, and read most of them. But this, her last, was new to me...Written in the early seventies and set in a fictional late seventies, it tells the story of a few days in the life of one eccentric family in Cornwall, when the Americans 'invade' and the State of USUK is set up.By turns hilarious, banal and profound, prescient and muddle-headed, naive and knowing, make no mistake - there is darkness at the heart of this little novel...

... moreacters fascinating, especially the old lady and the kids. However, the story itself felt a bit too... unedited. The ending seemed like the author had run out of ideas or pages and just had to finish the book. less

Love D du M but this one doesn't attract me at all; quite the reverse in fact.
