Parker Graphic Novels
review 1: A beautifully-drawn graphic novel based on Donald Westlake's Parker books. Unlike many graphic novels, it has sections of text interspersed with dialogue-free watercolour artwork. The art style is watercolour brushstrokes and reminds me of calligraphy. It's beautiful, but occasionally confusing in the sections with no dialogue. I'd read Firebreak by Westlake, and always felt there was something *missing* from the story. Seeing the graphic novel adaptations (Hunter and The Outfit), my problem is clearer. Parker lacks heart, which is deliberate since the graphic novel tells us he feels emotion less than most people. No one around him seems to be anything other than a violent sociopath. The result are books that lacks heart too. What keeps the pages turning is the reader's f... moreascination with a force of nature - ruthless, relentless, driven and unforgiving. Parker kills almost everyone he meets. I think, over two graphic novels, he kills over 100 people in a few months - mostly in the heat of the moment. Where are the police? The relentless killing detracts attention from the story's climatic killings. I didn't care when he got even with Mal and Bronson from The Outfit. They were just another dead body...
review 2: Not awesome. The main character is unlikable. He's totally focused on revenge so much that he kills an innocent and it doesn't even phase him. He's not portrayed as a tortured soul though. It's almost like the author is portraying him as the "ideal" man. The smartest and the strongest person in every situation. No fear. No concern for anyone but himself. Totally autonomous. Totally unappealing. The art is exceptional. By far the best part of the book, very nicely styled, but unfortunately the art alone doesn't save it. less
