review 1: Another great adaptation of the Richard Stark Parker novels by Darwyn Cooke. This one adapts two novels, and towards the last half Cooke has real fun playing with the way the story is told varying his style greatly from very cartoony to illustrated text. Very nice and unexpected. Parker is his usual, brutal self. In this one, finding that he's still targeted by the mob, now calling itself the Outfit, Parker decides to blackmail and kill his way out of the Outfits sights. Nice touches include Parker having plastic surgery so no one will know what he looks like, and the different reactions people have to it.Now, a normal bit of crime fiction might have someone try to buy his way off a mob hotlist, but Parker not normal. No, he decides to call every thief he knows and asks th... moreem to start knocking off Outfit places, taking them for over a million bucks (apparently a lot of dough in 1963) hitting the Outfit where it hurts. It ends with a big shoot out, and Parker is right in the middle of it.Good stuff, especially when compare to the Jason Stathom movie, which portrayed a much less brutal and therefore much less fun Parker.
review 2: Donald Westlake (Richard Stark) was one of the early sculptors of this picaresque anti-hero genre. In Parker, we have the mold that many have since used. In fact, the current TV show Vegas seems to borrow a lot from this guy.Darwyn Cooke's graphics fit well with the "throw-back" nature of the story...simple b&w renderings that don't distract from the words.This book is all about pay-back and, if that's your core interest, Parker delivers. less
