review 1: The characters in this book were really engaging, even when I didn't like some of them very much. 15 Days without a Head is a tough luck, tough life kind of tale. I know that some people live like the characters in this story, and grow up like these children; and a story like this one makes me realise how fortunate I've been, and my children are. I love that this is a story where things get better, kind of, but it isn't completely a fairy tale; better still doesn't mean best. A very quick book to read, full of humanity.
review 2: I probably would have really liked this book when I was 14. At 45, it was... eh. I've read this story before in other books and there wasn't anything that really stood out for me in this telling of it- kids trying to survive on the
... moreir own because their parents are gone, or dead, or just not fit to parent. It reminded me of the 1993 movie King of the Hill, only not quite as convincing. I wish they had developed the mother and the girlfriend's characters more. The little brother who thinks he's a dog (or, more specifically, Scooby Doo) was a pretty well-drawn character, and the older brother who tells the story was sympathetic and fairly realistic. less
