review 1: Read this one aloud with my second grader as it was a bit hard for him to tackle on his own. He really enjoyed it (and all of my voice overs). I can't say that I loved the story, but I really appreciated the writer's style. I really liked how he stepped out of the story and talks directly to the reader. I really love how he wraps up with a challenge to the reader - lends nicely to building young writers. We will definitely be browsing the shelves for more from David Almond.
review 2: This book has been a humorous yet slightly over-aged book from the start. But first, let me shed some light on what it is. This novel depicts the life of Stanley Potts, who has been orphaned and now lives with his Uncle "Uncle Ernie" and aunt "Auntie Annie". Before, there had been
... more a thriving family business in a part of England that had to do with the shipyard industry. Now, they have gone bankrupt and Uncle Ernie is forced to find a way to make ends meet for the three of them. He gets this "wave of brilliance" when he picks up a can, fills it with pilchards and cod and then labels it "Pott's pilchards". From then on he transforms his home into a fish canning business, affecting the lives of his nephew, Stanley, and his wife, Annie, since they are both forced to work for him and deal with his fish "craziness". On Stanley's birthday, he is given a exception to go to to the fair and thus the adventure of where his life really starts, begins. Despite all this, I find that this book should not be in middle school shelves because the weak plot should not be further weakened by the exaggeration of dialogue, as I find Uncle Ernie does A LOT in the book such as "MACHINE MACHINE MACHINE .." and although I do understand that this is fiction I find that it does not provide enough of a story, enough of character insight for the average reader and in the end makes for an almost-abandoned book. It is very loosely based and some things are almost arbitrary. There are some simple and wonderful writing techniques such as its "panoramic" ending but other than that I wouldn't particularly recommend this. less
