review 1: From the first, this is a rambunctious adventure which plays on almost every single steampunk trope: Jack the Ripper, dirigibles, Dracula, automatons, Egyptology, and so on. It's a kind of para-literature and reads like one of the penny-dreadfuls it has so much joy in playing with. Perhaps it's not wildly original, and at times it is a bit clunky, but we forgive it everything because it is just so infectiously fun. I had a great time reading and the twists and turns kept me engaged. Just when I thought I knew what was going on - and hence, my interest might have flagged - something unexpected sprang up. A great little book - one of a projected trilogy.
review 2: This was a GREAT steampunk novel! I think it's in the top five I've read in recent years. It has a
... more lot of adventure, good steampunk elements, a great plot and really engaging characters. I think Gideon Smith shows that plucky courage we all wish we had within us when things get tough. I also like the mixing of historical characters with fictional characters. It adds a lot of depth to the writing, in my opinion, when you can add the weight of history to it. I am looking forward to the next book, I hope it is as good as this one was. less

The storyline was alright at best. I had a hard time finishing it as it did not hold my interest.

Very steampunky. I dug it! It made me think of 'The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen'.

was a struggle to keep going. This book lacked its promise from the blurb.

Not my thing. The writing is quite good, though.
