Josey Cirrini is sure of three things: winter is her favorite season, she’s a sorry excuse for a Southern belle, and sweets are best eaten in the privacy of her closet. For while Josey has settled into an uneventful life in her mother’s house, her one consolation is the stockpile of sugary treats and paperback romances she escapes to each night…. Until she finds her closet harboring Della Lee Baker, a local waitress who is one part nemesis—and two parts fairy godmother. With Della Lee’s tough love, Josey’s narrow existence quickly expands. She even bonds with Chloe Finley, a young woman who is hounded by books that inexplicably appear when she needs them—and who has a close connection to Josey’s longtime crush. Soon Josey is living in a world where the color red has startling powers, and passion can make eggs fry in their cartons. And that’s just for starters.
-Goodreads Summary
Whenever I get stuck in a reading rut I read a Sarah Addison Allen book. She writes magical realism, and she lives in my home state of North Carolina and most of her books are set here. It’s the ultimate comfort package, and all of the books are fairly quick reads.
She’s one of my favorite authors because of all this. This book didn’t stray from that classic form, though it wasn’t my favorite of hers, something about this one seemed a little more choppy than normal, and I think it’s because the plot twist was being foreshadowed so much, but it was still a beautiful book with good characters, and beautiful pops of extraordinary things happening in ordinary places. (If you are wondering my favorites of hers they are The Girl Who Chased the Moon and The Peach Keeper).
You just can’t beat magical realism as a genre when it’s done correctly and Sarah Addison Allen knows how to write it like a pro, and when you get that taste of the south in each book… it’s just wonderful.
I keep changing this rating on Goodreads from 3 to 4 stars, and that’s because I really want to give it 3.5 out of 5 stars.
