review 1: I'd give this book a 4.5 if Goodreads would let me. The writing exemplifies what excellent experimental work does - it takes bits and pieces of seemingly unrelated conventions and connects them into something new and unique, while making the reader feel something close to poignancy and awe. As a lover of poetry, theatre, and the philosophical thoughtful stream of consciousness abstract bent, I found this work to be powerful and genius. It's accessible, but it still makes you wonder and hits your heart with truth. I didn't give it a 5 because it was lacking that magical sense of complete synchronicity between author, story and reader for me. Still a great example of how to be limitless with a novel.
review 2: This is probably the most painful book I have ever re
... moread, and my score of four instead of five is purely because of my own shortcomings: my default preferred form is the novel, and this isn't a novel. I can't say that I "enjoyed" it - but I felt compelled to continue. It is beautifully written and it breaks your heart. I don't know if people who are actually in the position of having lost a child would be able to finish it. I do know that David Grossman has once again produced a work of genius. less
