review 1: This is a very hard book to read, whether in translation or in the original Hebrew. Grossman weaves the anxious voice of Ora with her trek with Avram through the Galil. As she tells Avram about Ofer, the couple climbs rocks, trips over roots, and absorbs the varied beauty of the land. Grossman seems to use the trek as a metaphor for the ups and downs of life in Israel. His descriptions of Avram's captivity and torture at the hands of the Egyptians during the Yom Kippur war are among the strongest I have read about the travails of war.

Chaque nouveau chapitre se... more découvre sans qu'un enjeu apparaisse. Le sort d'Ofer teste la patience du lecteur plus qu'il n'attise le récit. L'errance dans le désert ne fonctionne qu'un temps : Ora se serait tout aussi bien perdue en faisant la vaisselle. Le livre n'en aurait d'ailleurs qu'été meilleur car beaucoup plus bref. less
