review 1: I have read most of Guterson's work and have always appreciated his style, especially his ability to paint a realistic picture of the unique Northwest culture and lifestyle, both the good and the not so good. Some of these stories are set in the northwest but he also ranges around the globe with stories set in South Africa, Berlin, Katmandu. The characters in each of the stories grapple with relationships: family, friend, lover, tenants and so on. His writing is clear and concise but evoking the pain, frustration, depression and paranoia of every day life. My favorite short story from this collection is "Tenant".
review 2: People: they can be wonderful, or not; beloved, or not so much, yet humans are social by nature and seem to crave interaction with other peo
... moreple. This is the subject of David Guterson’s latest collection of short stories, Problems with People. There can be no doubt that humans are complex, and the stories in this collection focus on the myriad ways that life can alter individuals. From the widow attempting to reenter the dating scene to the middle aged man trying to understand his parents and their complicated relationship, each story presents the reader with sharply defined characters each struggling with their own humanity. The stories in this collection often include tragedy and pain, yet each resounds with the resilience of the human spirit. Guterson once again proves not only to be a gifted author but also to have a precise insight into human nature. Crossing the boundaries of age, geographic location, politics and cultures Guterson reinforces the commonalities people share. While we may all have problems with people, they may hurt us, or cause us to examine our own selves, and perhaps even scar us, Guterson reminds us that they are worth the trouble. Tightly focused and absorbing, each story in Problems with People is a gem to be savored. less
